PROFINET is the open standard for industrial networking in automation from Siemens which can easily integrate into existing systems and equipment while bringing the richness of Ethernet down to the factory floor with maximum flexibility. 

PROFINET exchanges data including quality and asset management information. It can arrange the data such that all the parameters are always in the same place, allowing devices to be changed from one vendor’s to another’s without any user interaction required.


EtherNet/IP is an industrial network protocol that adapts the Common Industrial Protocol to standard Ethernet. The protocol is managed by the ODVA and has become widely adopted by Rockwell Automation. 

EtherNet/IP uses both of the most widely deployed collections of Ethernet standards –the Internet Protocol suite and IEEE 802.3 – to define the features and functions for its transport, network, data link and physical layers. 


EtherCAT is the open real-time Ethernet network originally created by Beckhoff Automation. The EtherCAT protocol which is disclosed in the IEC standard IEC61158 is suitable for hard and soft real-time requirements in automation technology applications.

A unique principle called “processing on the fly” gives EtherCAT a handful of unique advantages. Because EtherCAT messages are passed before being processed in each node, EtherCAT operates at a high speed and efficiency.
